New Parking Lot

November 5, 2007

Today we had the second phase of our parking lot construction project. A couple weeks ago we had the tree taken down and today they came and tore out the old asphalt, put a layer of gravel down and then poured the new layers on top. They were only able to put one layer on most of the lot to allow for it to settle over the winter. They will return once classes have ended to put the final layer of asphalt down. We want to thank anyone who donated to this project. It is great to have a new lot.

AGR Welcomes New Colony
May 23, 2006, Kansas City, Mo.
Beta Pi Colony of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity is proud to announce on May 16, 2006 the National Fraternity of Alpha Gamma Rho welcomed its newest colony at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana. This group, now known as Beta Pi Colony, was formerly the Beta Pi Chapter of AGR. Representing the national fraternity were Director of Chapter Development Thad Koenigsfeld, and Chapter Consultant Josh Wackler. Members of the Alpha Epsilon Chapter of Louisiana State University were present to initiate the 21 undergraduate brothers into the new Beta Pi Colony.

The new adviser for the colony is Jeff Hillard. Jeff is a professor in the Department of Agricultural Sciences, and he served as an adviser for Beta Pi when it was still a chapter. The new brothers are heavily involved in a wide variety of clubs and organizations in the agricultural college and on campus, but they felt that something was still missing in their college experience. After some discussion, they decided AGR could help fill that void, and give them something to truly be proud of. After meeting certain requirements, and recruiting enough young men to qualify, they were ready to make the thought of an AGR colony on their campus a reality.

The original Beta Pi Chapter at Louisiana Tech had its charter revoked in May of 2001 due to a variety of reasons, but mostly due to low numbers. This new group hopes to re-establish AGR as the top fraternity on campus, and is aiming to regain the chapter charter very soon. A group of the new members plan to attend the National Convention in Breckenridge, Colorado this August, and they are excited to participate in even more AGR events in the future.

Congratulations to the gentlemen at Louisiana Tech for their hard work and dedication towards Alpha Gamma Rho. AGR looks forward to seeing this colony develop and grow. The fraternity will eagerly wait for them to achieve chapter status in the near future. Congratulations again to the new Beta Pi Colony of AGR!

If you would like to congratulate the new colony members you may contact them or the advisers by any of the following ways: Beta Pi Colony, PO Box 10198 Ruston, LA 71272
Noble Ruler - Joshua Wilhite, jwi013@latech.edu

Gamma Alpha Chapter Installed at Florida Southern College
Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity is proud to announce on April 2, 2006 the National Fraternity of Alpha Gamma Rho installed its newest chapter, Gamma Alpha, at Florida Southern College (FSC) in Lakeland, Florida. The brothers of the Alpha Gamma Chapter from the University of Florida, Gainesville, installed the newest brothers of AGR. Alumni and national representatives, including Grand President Richard Carpenter, Southeast Regional Vice President Richard Kelly, Executive Director Phil Josephson, and Director of Chapter Development Thad Koenigsfeld, witnessed the official initiation of 20 undergraduates and six alumni. One of the new alumni members, Malcolm Manners, is a FSC faculty member serving as adviser.

FSC President, Dr. Ann Kerr, was present at the celebration banquet Sunday evening, as were several other representatives of the college administration, giving personal words of encouragement and praise. This event was a monumental accomplishment for the young men who have worked toward this goal for the past four years.

The group of men has grown from a small club to one of the largest Greek organizations on FSC's campus. They have been extremely active on campus and in the community. As a colony, the group has sent representatives to the last two AGR national conventions as well as several other workshops and seminars around the country.

There are two individuals who have and will continue to serve as advisers to the new Gamma Alpha Chapter. Dr. Malcolm Manners and Professor Timothy Hurner have both been dedicated to the success of the organization and have guided this group of men through the lengthy development stages. Dr. Manners was initiated with the undergraduate brothers. Professor Hurner is an AGR alumnus from the University of Florida. Both of these individuals have worked hand-in-hand with the undergraduates lending advice and support.

Congratulations to all those who have played a role in the success of the brothers at Florida Southern College. Persistence, hard work, determination and commitment have made the goals of these men a reality. With the guidance of their advisers, the support of alumni and the continued enthusiasm of the members, the Gamma Alpha Chapter at Florida Southern College expects to thrive for years to come.

Alpha Gamma Rho raises funds for Michigan farmers to modify their farm.
The Michigan AgrAbility Project will be able to help a few more farmers this coming year thanks to the great efforts of Alpha Gamma Rho (AGR) Fraternity, a chapter at Michigan State University. This fraternity consists of young men studying agriculture at Michigan State University with the desire to enrich their academic experience through agriculture programs and community service. On September 9, 2005, AGR held their annual hog roast to raise funds for this worthy program, contributing $1,600 to the farmer rehabilitation fund. The funds generated from the 2005 Annual AGR Hog Roast will help purchase farm modifications for Michigan farmers who are seeking help from Michigan AgrAbility. This Michigan State University Extension program assists farmers with disabilities or changes in their lives that reduce their ability to continue farming. Modifying equipment will allow the farmer to perform the job at hand in a more comfortable and safer way. Typically, regardless of farmer's physical abilities, they do not have the option to just forget a difficult task; such as feeding cows or cultivating corn. The Michigan AgrAbility Project assists farmers to identify and install modifications to their farm equipment to make the job doable. The fund assists farmers with the cost of the equipment so they can continue working. If you know of a farmer who could benefit from this program ask them to call the Michigan AgrAbility Project at 800-856-4106 to participate or for additional information.

Alpha Zeta Names AGRs to Honor Roll
Early in August, the Fraternity of Alpha Zeta, the nation's oldest professional honorary society to recognize agricultural scholarship, leadership and service, observed its 100th Anniversary in Columbus, Ohio, where it was founded in 1897. The fraternity now boasts more than 105,000 members, including both men and women representing 67 chapters in the United States.

To mark its 100th anniversary, Alpha Zeta officials established a Centennial Honor Roll on which the names of 200 persons considered to have made outstanding contributions to food production or in natural resources, were to be inscribed.

One hundred of those chosen were to be selected out of the fraternity's membership. An additional 100 persons were to be named out of the millions of others in agriculture. An impressive ceremony took place to announce the honorees chosen and present them with beautiful medallions, elaborate citations, and special pins and photographs.

While the prestige of Alpha Gamma Rho has always been high, the fraternity's status gained even more at the Columbus Summit. Of the 200 men and women chosen for Alpha Zeta's Centennial Honor Roll, 56 were members of AGR, the largest number of any one organization, society or fraternity.

Heading the list of Alpha Gamma Rho Brothers, who could easily be considered a WHO's WHO of Agriculture, was Philip Josephson, AGR's tireless Executive Director. Other AGRs whose names are nationally or internationally recognized included Nobel Peace Prize winner, Norman Borlaug of Mexico; former US Secretaries of Agriculture Clifford Hardin and Earl Butz; Russ Mawby, former Kellogg Foundation Chairman; Dean Kleckner, president of the American Farm Bureau's 3.1 million members; Bill Knox, publisher of Hoard's Dairyman; Loren Kruse, editor for Successful Farming; Gene Swackhamer of Farm Credit; Orion Samuelson, internationally known farm broadcaster; and David Pfender, Purdue's Dean of Agriculture.

Dr. Rae Wilkinson, High Chancellor of Alpha Zeta, and Steve Drake, Alpha Zeta's executive officer, did the honors and presented the medallions on the stage when the honorees were introduced.

Alpha Zeta received more than 500 nominations for consideration, and with more than a fourth of all those actually named to the illustrious Centennial Honor Roll, brothers in the bond of Alpha Gamma Rho can continue to be rightfully proud of their school achievements.
